Your billing rights
Good Faith Estimate Information
If you do not have health insurance or do not plan to use insurance for scheduled care, you generally have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate of expected charges when required by federal law.
Requesting an estimate
Ask for an estimate before scheduling or when you schedule. The estimate should describe the reasonably expected charges for the scheduled items or services based on information available at that time.
If the bill is substantially higher
If your final bill is at least $400 more than the Good Faith Estimate from a provider or facility, you may qualify for the federal patient-provider dispute-resolution process.
